As we know two most frequent reasons for health caused death is obessity and starving. Total disbalance. Something is wrong.
Buffet-style table contributes. You overeat and create a lot of waste. There are 28 million hotel/hostel/B&B beds in Europe. With estimated 50% occupancy rate it means 5billion overnight stays. 3 EUR per breakfast is 15 billion spent on breakfast buffet-style in Europe alone. Around 20% of food is wasted (just look around next time you stay in hotel after breakfast - plates are still half full after people finish). Another 30% we tend to eat more than we should, because of inner greed (no extra charge for that extra sausage, potato, omlet, cake, bread etc). Net, 50% of food is just not used properly.
EU should tax buffet-style offerings with some 20% tax (call it "obessity tax") and "invisible hand" of business will switch their offerings to menu, saving a lot of that waste. One simple move and we would generate enough cash for Europe to pay off foreign debt of Latvia (Copyrights here).
